Reflection:
This assignment helped me in practicing communication with the parents of my future students. Establishing communication is vital in creating a positive classroom environment between teacher, parents, and students. Since most pre-school students are not able to fully communicate with their parents what they are learning in school, a communicator, such as a wikispace, would allow the teacher to explain what is happening in their classroom and give parents ways to further enhance their student´s literacy.
The Many Languages, One Classroom text gave a wide variety of examples for Dual Language Leaners. It stresses the importance of parent involvement and communication. Parents can be very present in the classroom- teaching students songs and games in their native language and country. This will help establish a welcoming, inviting classroom community. It is also important to set certain areas of the classroom for specific study- for example a science, reading, or play area. In these areas, there will be provided manipulatives for them to learn and play with. For Dual Language Learners, social interaction is the key to extending and practicing language. In all of these specified areas, students can learn while interacting and enhancing their language.
